Master Class: Walking with the Ancients

Friday, November 15, 2019, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

No matter how you feel about myths and other traditional stories, youve got to admit: they have staying power. Some have been around for, easily, thousands of yearspassed down through word of mouth before eventually being written down. And after all that, they still grip modern audiences. Yet other tales are so whack-a-doodle they are not tell-able, and were they not captured in a book, they would have dropped off the radar long ago. Why the difference? In this master class well take a short walk in the shoes of those ancient tellers to explore story crafting that sticks. Well look at how the human brain holds on to information in content and form, and how that, plus time, can result in characters and events that engage or challenge our modern sensibilities. Well explore how some common metaphors came to be and how they continue to influence the stories we tell today, whether we know it or not. This class will be helpful to those seeking to decode traditional tales, as well as inform the crafting of contemporary stories to increase their relevance to, and staying power with, broader audiences. The workshop is intended for those who have experience in both crafting stories and in performing before live audiences. Ingrid Nixon is a world-traveling storyteller who whisks listeners away on journeys of the imagination. Exploration nail-biters, tall tales, traditional and personal storiesshe tells them all on international expeditions, and at venues around the country, including the National Storytelling Festival. Her creative approaches to story crafting help make ancient tales relevant to modern audiences. Both of Ingrid's recordings have received the Storytelling World Gold Seal for listeners of all ages. Her audio recording, Grimms with a Twist, offers deliciously dark stories spiced liberally with humor and pathos. Operation Bouncy Chair, features personal stories about the important things in life: family, love, and coffee. She has a new creepy story collection out in 2019. She is a champion liar many times over, a claim that makes her mother both proud and worried. She holds a Masters in Storytelling from East Tennessee State University. She currently hails from Southeast Alaska. More at IngridNixon.com.
