Oregon Reads Aloud Virtual Read-a-thon and Fundraiser to Raise $750,000 for

Statewide Children’s Literacy Nonprofit

Oregon celebrities including Portland Timbers Mascot Timber Joey, Oregon Alum Marcus Mariota, NBC’s Keith Morrison and others will make special appearances to read kids’ books

Portland, Ore. ̶ The Oregon-based children’s literacy nonprofit, SMART Reading, is holding a statewide read-a-thon and fundraiser on Friday, Feb. 26. Called Oregon Reads Aloud, the event is being held in place of an annual in-person fundraiser and will engage a statewide audience of supporters, volunteers and families virtually for a day of children’s stories culminating in a live fundraising event. The event is free to attend.

Beginning at 9 a.m. and throughout the day, advocates from each of SMART Reading’s 10 Oregon regions will read children’s stories in a continuous, live-streamed read-a-thon. A number of celebrity readers will make appearances throughout the day, including NBC’s Keith Morrison; Portland Timbers mascot, Timber Joey; Napoleon Dynamite’s Jon Heder; Oregon Duck alum, Marcus Mariota; and KGW reporter, Christine Pitawanich. (See below for a detailed schedule of reading times.)

“Although the COVID-era has introduced many challenges and changes in how we do our work and hold events, kids need books and reading support now more than ever,” says Chris Otis, SMART Reading Executive Director. “We’re excited about Oregon Reads Aloud because it’s truly statewide in nature and brings Oregonians together from all corners of the state to celebrate the power of books and reading to transform children’s lives. We’re going to need the full support and engagement of our community to help meet our ambitious goal of raising $750,000 to support statewide operations – but I know Oregonians are up to the task!”

Cost: About SMART Reading SMART Reading is a children’s literacy nonprofit that serves kids in Oregon’s highest need schools with two ingredients critical for literacy and learning success: one-on-one reading time and access to books. We mobilize volunteers to read with PreK through third-grade children, building confidence, literacy skills and a love of reading. We provide a meaningful way for Oregonians to make a direct impact in their communities. Since 1992, we have paired over 144,000 volunteers to read with 233,000 children, and have put 3 million books in the homes of the children we serve.
