AAA, a federation of motor clubs boasting 59 million members throughout North America, has awarded Portland’s White House with its coveted Four Diamond Award for being “refined and stylish with upscale physical attributes, extensive amenities and a high degree of hospitality, service and attention to detail,” announced owner Frank Groff. AAA says that only 6% of the 27,000 AAA inspected and approved lodgings evaluated each year earn Four Diamond status.
“David and I hired top-notch talent and used only quality materials to revitalize Portland’s White House, which had been in run-down condition prior to the renovation,” said Groff. “We are particularly thrilled that this incredible historic B&B — a point of great pride for many Portlanders — was recognized by AAA with this distinction.”
“AAA Four Diamond hotels are truly the best of the best!” says Marie Dodds, public affairs director for AAA Oregon/Idaho. “There are many rating systems out there, but the AAA Diamond Ratings are the only rating system to use professional inspectors who visit each property annually. Our inspectors look at everything from cleanliness and ambiance to amenities and hospitality. Every property must meet and uphold AAA’s rigorous approval standards.”
Groff and his partner, David Krause, spent $1 million undertaking the extensive remodel of the house that includes 9 ensuite bedrooms, grand common areas and an 85-seat ballroom that is ideal for wedding receptions, corporate affairs, birthday celebrations, etc.
Portland’s White House is set in an imposing Greek Revival mansion that was built for Oregon timber baron Robert Lytle, who spared no expense on its construction. He made it virtually fireproof with metal lath and plaster and tile roofs then carefully installed the very finest materials, including mahogany accents, wood floors and Povey Bros. stained glass, known as “The Tiffany of the Northwest.”
