Rock Creek Choirs Present Concert of American Music
Reminiscences of the carefree days of youth is the theme of the Portland Community College Rock Creek Choir’s fall program. Fern Hill, a staple in the repertoire of leading choirs throughout the country by American composer John Corigliano, will be one of the highlights of the concert.
Special guests include mezzo soprano Angela Niederloh, pianist Lee Nolan guitarist Lee Barbara and chamber orchestra. Dr. Samuel Barbara, director of choral and vocal studies at PCC Rock Creek, will conduct.
Multiple Grammy and Pulitzer Prize winning composer John Corigliano’s 1961 work Fern Hill, with text by poet Dylan Thomas, is Corigliano’s homage not only to Thomas, but also to his high school music teacher who first encouraged his musical ambitions. This captivating work highlights the musicality of Thomas’s words. As Thomas said of the poem: “what the words meant was of secondary importance; what matters was the sound of them…these words were as the notes of bells, the sounds of musical instruments.”
The concert will also include The Lake Isle by Ola Gjeilo, a setting of the spiritual Roll Jordan, Roll by Stacey Gibbs and The Old Church by Stephen Paulus.
