Salem Audubon Birding: Brown's Ferry Park, Tualatin
This fall bird walk is an extended SHORT due to the mileage to Tualatin from Salem with one way 47 miles. The entire area is 28 acres historically known as a riverside wetland, with trees and plants that have adapted to the terrain with past flooding. This suburban park includes a narrow trail along the Tualatin River with Nyberg Creek entering at one point. One highlight of the park is the close visual observation possible like this summer’s fledgling Pileated Woodpecker pounding more than 25 min. on a snag. In this park of draining tributaries is a conservation area. We will follow the trail and return to view the signature pond life and duck species with possible species of Green Heron, Wilson’s Snipe, Gadwall, Eurasian Wigeon, and late Osprey. Passerines are in the riparian areas close to the trail. We will look for fall migrants joining our resident birds.
This is approximately a 2-mile walk. Meet at Salem’s Airport Rd Park and Ride at 8:30 AM to carpool. The Park and Ride entrance is on Airport Road. Airport Road is a block north of Mission St (Hwy 22), next to the state motor pool. There is no Park and Ride restroom, but there are facilities at the park. It is possible to join us at the park, with our expected time of arrival there at about 9:15AM. Plan for changes in weather this time of year and wear shoes for a dirt trail that could be wet. Bring snacks and water. We plan to return by noon.
