Science On Tap - Coming to a Fault Near You: Planning for Cascadia Earthquakes
Doors open at 6 PM The Pacific Northwest is due for a major earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, and a magnitude 9 Cascadia earthquake and tsunami would likely produce an unprecedented catastrophe. Portland isn’t ready, and significant preparation is needed to safeguard communities, businesses, and people. We can learn from several recent earthquakes around the world including Chile, Japan, New Zealand, and Mexico. At this Science on Tap, geotechnical engineer Allison Pyrch will discuss Portland’s earthquake setting, what similar quakes can tell us about what to expect from a Cascadia earthquake, and how the PNW is preparing for “the really big one”. $15 General Admission $8 Students w/ ID Note: This is a repeat of a talk given at the Kiggins Theatre in Vancouver in July 2019.
